Why Start a Home-Based Business

What are 5 great reasons to begin a home business?

Making the decision to open my own Virtual Assistant Practice was the best career decision I have ever made! I officially launched my home business April 1, 2008. At the time, I had two young boys – one less than 6 months old. It was a little scary, but they were my inspiration to make it work. Everyone has different reasons to start a business, but I am willing to bet the following five reasons that applied to me also apply to many others out there ready to make the jump.

Reason #1 to start a home-based business:

You can be home for your kids. Now, understandably, working and caring for your children is not always realistic, so whether you adjust your hours around their naps and bedtimes, or you get creative in other ways, the point is that you are available for them. I have been able to take my kids to all their doctor and dentist appointments over the years. I made my schedule work around those important dates because for me, that was the priority as a working parent.

Reason #2 to start a home-based business:

We’ve all seen those zoom commercials recently, so you probably know where I’m headed LOL. You can go to work in your pajamas OR as those silly advertisements show, business on top and PJs (or other under garment😊) on the bottom. For some people, being comfortable and taking less time to get ready in the morning is key. For myself, I actually prefer to get up and get dressed, maybe even put on some jewelry. I’m casual, but not sweatpants casual. I find it more motivating to dress the part, but that’s just me.

Reason #3 to start a home-based business:

You can make your own hours. Whether you have kids or not, you get to determine your working hours. Now that said, I know that most of us have a hard time putting work down since technology enables us to work pretty much anytime and anywhere. I don’t necessarily recommend that lifestyle, but if you are just starting out, then it might be unavoidable. Even if you have to base your hours around your clients, you still don’t have someone telling you when you have to work.

Reason #4 to start a home-based business:

If you take the initiative to continuously learn and grow within your field of expertise as well as adding skillsets, it benefits YOUR business, not someone else’s. Even if you use your own time to learn a skill that you will use to complete work for a client, it makes you more valuable to that client and earns you more billable hours.

Reason #5 to start a home-based business:

Number 5 is my FAVORITE reason to start your own work-from-home business. Working out of the home can be a challenge in many ways, yes. But working for yourself is great motivation to be your best self and to do your best work.

That wraps up my top 5 reasons to start a small home-based business
